Residence Hall and Hotel Accommodations

In the past, most workshop participants have chosen to stay at MSU's Owen Graduate Center. Owen Graduate Center will be closed for remodeling during summer of 2009. McDonel Hall (located just east of Owen Graduate Hall) will be used for on-campus summer 2009 lodging. All housing arrangements for McDonel must be made through the CLEAR office. Other participants may prefer to make their own arrangements and stay at other accommodations near MSU's campus.

McDonel Hall (on MSU campus)

This is a student dormitory. Reservations for workshop participants must be made through the CLEAR office (517-432-2286).

  • Double occupancy lodging: $23.75 per person/night (price current for 2009)
  • Single occupancy lodging: $27.50 per night (price current for 2009)
  • Check in: 3:00pm, Check out: 11:00am
  • Participants will pay McDonel directly (not CLEAR) upon check-out
  • Lodging rates do not include a meal allowance. McDonel cafeteria is not open during the summer break. Meals are available at the Gallery at Snyder-Phillips Hall; $5.00 for breakfast, $8.50 for lunch, and $8.50 for dinner, plus tax. Meal purchases can be made at the door. Snyder-Phillips is located a short distance from McDonel Hall, on the North side of the river on Bogue Street. Dining facilities are also available in the International Center next to Wells Hall and on Grand River Avenue in downtown East Lansing.

Basic Facts for McDonel Rooms

    • Room Size - approximately 11' x 12', single or double occupancy
    • Furniture - 2 twin beds, desk, chair, and dresser
    • Bathrooms - suites, two rooms connected by a bathroom
    • Linens - sheets and towels, pillow and blanket are provided
    • Air Conditioning - not provided (may want to bring a fan if possible)
    • Phones - free local calls in rooms (phone line activated, bring your own phone)
    • Ethernet Connections - available via the campus system (bring your own cable)
    • Wi-fi - available in lobbies and lounges
    • Smoke-Free and Barrier-Free - available upon request
    • Onsite Facilities - laundry room, game and TV room, ATM

    Some hotels offer an MSU rate. When making your reservations, be sure to ask for any applicable discounts. The prices listed above are subject to change depending on weekdays vs. weekends, special events, etc.

    CLEAR encourages all workshop participants to make their reservations early due to special events.

    On-campus Parking

    Please refer to the MSU website (www.construction.msu.edu) for information regarding summer 2009 construction projects.

    Parking information for participants who will be driving to MSU and checking in at McDonel Hall the day before the workshop is scheduled to begin.

    Visitors staying at McDonel should use metered (check meterhead for hours of operation) parking spots or park in the circular drive between Owen and McDonel Hall to unload and check-in, or temporarily park in Ramp 3 (Wharton Center visitor lot, directly south of Owen, 80 cents per 1/2 hour or portion thereof). Then you will need to drive your car to parking lot #91. Parking lot #91 is located on the corner of Hagadorn Road and Service Road. This is a free parking lot during the summer; no parking permit is required. It is about a 15-minute walk back to McDonel. There is also a bus that goes by there every day except Sunday. The route number is #23, and the cost is $1.25. You will need to get off at the bus stop (2539) in front of the Eppley Center (Business College Complex), which is about one block from McDonel. Bus schedules can be found at: http://www.cata.org or by calling 517-394-1000.

    Parking near McDonel is limited to special circumstances (i.e. handicapped parking). There are handicapped spaces located near McDonel; however, they may already be in use when you arrive. Contact CLEAR before arriving on campus if you feel you have a special circumstance.

    Parking information for participants who will be driving daily to MSU for the CLEAR summer workshop

    The closest visitor parking lot to Wells Hall is the Visitor and Commuter Parking lot #79. The entrance to lot #79 is off of Shaw Lane. Park on the east side on the lot, then walk across Red Cedar Road to Wells Hall. The daily charge for parking here is $.80 cents for every half hour or portion thereof, or you can buy a conference parking permit directly from the MSU Parking Officeat the Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) for $10.00 valid for up to 5 days in one M-F week). You must park in lots 62W, 79, or Ramp #6 with this permit. You can also buy a daily visitor parking permit for $6/day. With a visitor parking permit, you can park near Wells Hall where it states "reserved for employee parking only" or in visitor lot #79 but not in leased spaces, university vehicle spaces, or in metered parking. Please let the parking office know you are here for a conference for CLEAR when buying your permit. DPPS is located at 87 Red Cedar Road, just west of the Communication Arts and Sciences building. You can call 517-355-8440 to get automated voice directions to their building. DPPS is open from 7:30 AM to 4:45 PM, Monday-Friday.

    There are also several free parking lots this summer on campus. They are lots #75, #83, #89 and #91. Lot #75 is the closest to Wells Hall. Lot #75 is the second lot West of the Breslin Center off of Kalamazoo Street. It is about a 20-minute walk to Wells Hall.
